Abstract: in the 16th-17th centuries, the Jews of East Swabia lived in small towns. They worked as traders and as moneylenders. The multiplicity of political entities, and the division of governmental powers between nobles and the imperial government, produced a situation in which Jews subject to expulsion in one area could move to another area, and Jews subject to the governance of one authority could appeal for support to a competing authority. Despite the widely varied and deeply entrenched economic relationships between Jews and Christians, Jews were viewed as foreigners. Their foreignness was accentuated by differences in speech, dress, religion, and housing patterns. The threat of violence against Jews fluctuated during this period.
