Abstract:
Discusses the ideological aspects of Sobol's plays against the background of developments in Israeli society and theater, mentioning his use of the Jewish experience in the Vilna ghetto as the setting for a number of his plays. Analyzes the theatrical means by which Sobol portrays the inner conflict of Otto Weininger in "The Soul of a Jew, " which deals with Weininger's suicide in Vienna in 1903. Examines the different ways in which audiences in Israel and abroad perceived Sobol's use in the play of elements of Zionism and antisemitism, as well as male-female tension, as a metaphor for both developments within Israeli society and the development of Nazi Germany. Pp. 165-173 contain a translation of excerpts from the "The Soul of a Jew."
