Abstract:
The philosophy of Baruch Spinoza features three principal layers: substance, attribute, and modes. Unlike substance and modes, Spinoza holds that the attributes are necessarily held in relation to the intellect. Many prominent scholars of Spinoza have wondered about these relations. Because of this very relation of the intellect to the attributes, some scholars have understood the attribute as having only epistemic reality. In contrast, others have maintained the ontological reality of the attribute. This article aims to analyze the essence of the relation between the intellect and the attribute in Spinoza’s metaphysics and to examine its primary sources of influence. The article will be divided into three parts. First, I will discuss the relation between the intellect and the attributes; I will substantiate the assumption that the attributes must be understood as an aspect of God’s essence, which is obligated from it. In addition, I will examine the subject on the basis of the Latin differentiation between propria and attributum and the mind-body connection. Second, I will briefly review the theory of essential attributes in R. Hasdai Crescas’s metaphysics and the role of the intellect in this regard. Third, I will dwell on the architectural and functional parallels between Crescas’s theory of attributes and that of Spinoza. From these parallels, I will argue the legitimate possibility that Crescas may have influenced Spinoza’s thought on the subject.
