Abstract:
Discusses the portrayal of Shylock's character from a psychoanalytic point of view. Argues that Shakespeare had no empathy whatsoever for the Jew, treating him as a non-person. States that Shakespeare probably knew no living Jew, but that he was very well-acquainted with the medieval historical and literary myth of the Jew-as-devil: as Christ-killer, ritual murderer, greedy, cunning, and vengeful. Describes Shakespeare's literary sources, among them plays by Marlowe and Ser Giovanni, which had an influence on Shylock's image - not as an ethnic stranger but as the mythical Jew - the ogre to be avoided or even exterminated.
