Abstract:
Discusses the reflection of attitudes toward the Holocaust in Israeli public discourse as expressed in the dramaturgical presentation (in the theater and on television) of two historical personalities - Hanna Szenes and Israel Kasztner. Surveys plays written and staged in Israel up to the 1970s about Szenes, whose figure portrayed the heroic aspect of the Holocaust memory, which in those years dominated the public discourse in Israel. also reflects on dramaturgical works about Kasztner whose figure replaced, since the 1980s, the portrait of Szenes as a symbol of Holocaust memory. States that the legitimation of Kasztner's controversial acts and figure reveal a different insight into the conflicts confronted by public figures in Nazi-occupied Europe. The change reflects a new interpretation of the Holocaust engendered by Eichmann's trial as well as by social and political factors. The Israelis lost interest in heroes and martyrs when they became interested in knowing more about the victims of the Holocaust.
