Christianity and antisemitism History 1945-
Abstract:
Relates, briefly, the approach of Western Christian theology to the Holocaust, the issue of the Churches' responsibility, and the ongoing debate on the Christian roots of modern antisemitism. However, a similar reevaluation did not occur in Russian Orthodox theology. Discusses Berdyayev’s essay "Christianity and Antisemitism" (1938) and its strong condemnation of antisemitism, noting, however, the persistence of Christian stereotypes in his thinking. Mentions the participation of the local Soviet population in the Nazi mass murder of Jews, and emphasizes the responsibility of the Russian Church for its passivity and silence during that time. Discusses the rise of Pamyat and its nationalistic ideology, focusing on its adoption of traditional Russian Orthodox components. Claims that the new aggressive nationalistic ideology was molded in the political culture of communist ideology, and it uses the same antisemitic myths. Remarks on the passive attitude of the Russian Church toward these new trends, and its identification with nationalistic writings (e.g. Shafarevich’s "Russophobia"), which elaborate a new version of the "world Jewish conspiracy" theory, with the Russian people as the main victims of this alleged plot.
