Abstract:
Outlines the decisive role played by the Chief Rabbi of Geneva and former Chief Rabbi of Romania, Alexandre Şafran, in the initiative to obtain the title of Righteous among the Nations for the Queen Mother Elena (1896-1982) of Romania. In 1993 she was posthumously granted this title for her acts of courage in saving Jews during the Holocaust, especially for her pleas in 1942 not to deport Jews to Transnistria, and in 1943-44 to allow deported Jews to return from Transnistria. In some cases, she succeeded. Pp. 338-344 contain the texts of two letters sent in February 1992 by Şafran to Mordecai Paldiel of Yad Vashem, Paldiel's reply to him, the resolution of the Commission for the Designation of the Righteous among the Nations on granting the title to Elena, and other materials.
