Abstract:
Surveys Bettelheim's writings (from 1943 to 1979) on the inmates' behavior in concentration camps which he viewed as passive submissiveness to their captors, the individual becoming impotent and infantilized. Examines later criticism of Bettelheim's theory, and especially that of Terrence Des Pres in his book "The Survivor" (1976) who held that inmates' behavior was characterized by positive coping and a tendency to organize and help each other. Bettelheim's studies were based on the role of the individual as he saw it in his own limited experience, and disregarded the complex social system which developed in the camps.
