Abstract:
A study based on records previously stored in the East German Central State Archives in Potsdam - a collection of reports sent by members of German units to Berlin as accompanying letters to the property confiscated in the East. The property and the reports were sent to the War Booty Office of the Reich Main Treasury of the Reichsbank ("Reichshauptkasse Beutestelle"). Some thirty reports mention Jewish personal property seized in the USSR. The main perpetrators of the plunder were the Einsatzgruppen; but insofar as many other agencies (the Order Police, Waffen SS, Wehrmacht, etc.) collaborated with them in the genocide, they also had a share in the seizure of property. Beneficiaries of the Nazi looting were not only the Reich treasury, but also the institutions that submitted the property, e.g. the SS. The Reichsbank and the Finance Ministry had clear evidence that the valuables that were consigned to them were seized from the victims of the Nazi mass murder in the East.
