Abstract:
Contends that, from the 1920s, a school of Jewish writers in the Polish language has evolved who have expressed their ambivalence about Polish identity. Up to 1939 they discussed these subjects obliquely, but during and since the Holocaust they have openly described feelings of exclusion from Polish society due to antisemitism, disappointment with the liberal Jewish elite, and alienation from the traditional Jewish community. Many became communists, but disillusionment with communism led them to take refuge in literature, and particularly in the role of witness to the Jewish experience.
