Abstract:
Discusses introductions to ultra-Orthodox rabbinical works, which contain memoirs and/or reflections on the Holocaust. Focusing on works written in Israel in the 1940s-60s, notes that most of the writers saw their survival as a miracle, but were plagued by the question of why they were saved while their relatives were killed. Many felt that they were saved due to the righteousness of their forefathers or because they had a mission to accomplish. Theologically, several views were expressed by the writers, including the blaming of man for the Holocaust rather than God; seeing the Holocaust as a test, like the sacrifice of Isaac was for Abraham; and justification of the Divine decree. In the memoirs, many of the writers depicted themselves as anti-heroes, weak and afraid, while the real hero was God, their rescuer. This view also assuaged guilt feelings, since the survivors were saved by God, and not by themselves.
