Abstract:
Discusses blood libels in the 19th-20th centuries in different regions of Germany, followed by physical attacks on Jews and plundering of their property. Focuses on the blood libels in Cologne (1808), Dormagen (1819), Neuenhoven (1834), Düsseldorf (1836), and Xanten (1891). Prussian authorities accused the Catholic Church of inciting Jew-hatred by diffusing legends which support such beliefs. In the late 1890s, the Deutsch-Soziale Partei used the blood libel in Xanten for political purposes in the region of Neuss, where antisemitism was especially popular.
