Abstract: An overview of the situation of the Jews of Tunisia, a French protectorate under the rule of Admiral Jean Pierre Estéva during the Vichy period. Reviews the main anti-Jewish laws and regulations passed in Tunisia and their application, which was less stringent than in France and Algeria. Discusses regulations regarding education, Jewish youth movements, the press, economic sanctions, a numerus clausus on the practice of law and medicine, and the census of June 1941 (89,670 Jews in Tunisia). Estéva objected to harsh measures against the Jews and he intervened on their behalf during the Nazi occupation (November 1942-May 1943); he and his administration believed that persecution of Jews was contrary to French interests. Surveys relations between the Jews and Arabs (close to 70,000 Jews were subjects of the bey). Describes the positive attitude towards the Jews of Moncef Bey, who came to the throne in June 1942 and was deposed in June 1943, and the ambivalent attitudes of leaders of the Arab nationalist movement and the Arab populace.
