Abstract: Traces the history of the Jewish community of the town of Brzeg (in German: Brieg), Silesia during the 14th-20th centuries. Discusses the practice of usury by Jews in the 14th-15th centuries which aroused anti-Jewish feelings. With the edict of Ferdinand I (1557), the process of expulsion of the Jews began; by the 17th century, Jews lived in a few designated towns in Silesia but not in Brzeg. The community was reestablished under Prussian rule in 1731. Describes the internal life of the Jewish community, mentioning privileges granted and restrictions imposed by the authorities, from the 18th century until the destruction of the Jews in 1942. The town, and the entire region, was ceded to Poland in 1945.
