Abstract:
In November 1900 Sigmund Lichtenstein, a Jewish store owner in Adrian, Georgia, accidentally killed John Welch, a drunken man who attacked him. The mayor of Adrian charged him with murder and attempted to rouse the populace against him. Lichtenstein was tried and acquitted, partly due to his defense by the lawyer Tom Watson, whose antisemitism was made manifest in a later case.
