Abstract:
Eran Reshef presents paintings that expose his interest in representational components and express the renewed appreciation of pictorial truth, i.e. roviding a new meaning to the transience of artistic representation, which enfolds both past and present. Reshef's paintings require one more gaze from the viewer, a lingering gaze that deviates beyond the technical achievement of meticulous representation. The presence of objects such as a chicken in the refrigerator or a loaf of bread is more than that of objects in the real world. They are aden with multiple meanings and ambivalence. The details that make up the painting ̶ composition, texture, form and color ̶ are seen as if through a magnifying glass, their presence sharp and harsh. Reshef's paintings do not adhere only to "what is in reality." No less than faithful to the visible, perhaps even more so, the realism of his paintings avoids wanting to create symbols, restrains the aspiration for absolute beauty and controls the impulse to "perfect" the visible and draw it closer to the realms of imagination. The great complexity of these paintings is based on effects that are harsh, strict, hard and at times sublime.
