    Abstract: "The visions of modernity depicted in the writings of major Modernist German-Jewish writers and philosophers manifest, says Vivian Liska, the paradoxical dynamic that the break with tradition invokes figures of thought derived from Jewish tradition. In German-Jewish Thought and Its Afterlife, Liska innovatively focuses on the changing form, fate and function of messianism, law, exile, election, remembrance, and the transmission of tradition itself in three different temporal and intellectual frameworks: German-Jewish modernism, postmodernism, and the current period. Highlighting these elements of the Jewish tradition in the works of Franz Kafka, Walter Benjamin, Gershom Scholem, Hannah Arendt, and Paul Celan, Liska reflects on dialogues and conversations between them and on the reception of their work. She shows how this Jewish dimension of their writings is transformed, but remains significant in the theories of Maurice Blanchot and Jacques Derrida and how it is appropriated, dismissed or denied by some of the most acclaimed thinkers at the turn of the twenty-first century such as Giorgio Agamben, Slavoj Žižek, and Alain Badiou."--

    Abstract: Das Deutsche Historische Museum zeigt in Zusammenarbeit mit der Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e.V. erstmals in Deutschland einhundert Kunstwerke aus der israelischen Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem. Als Abschluss des 50-jährigen Jubiläums der deutsch-israelischen Beziehungen ist die bis heute umfangreichste Präsentation aus der Sammlung des Yad Vashem außerhalb Israels als unschätzbares Zeichen der Freundschaft zu werten. Yad Vashem in Jerusalem ist der zentrale Ort des Gedenkens an die Shoah. Zentrale Aufgaben sind die museale Präsentation der Geschichte des Holocaust und deren wissenschaftliche Dokumentation. Die überwiegend grafischen Blätter in der Ausstellung stammen von Häftlingen aus verschiedenen Konzentrationslagern, Arbeitslagern und Ghettos und sind unter unmenschlichen Bedingungen im Geheimen entstanden. Sie zeugen von der Kraft des Geistes im Angesicht von Elend und Tod und dem Widerstreit zwischen der Wirklichkeit des Holocaust und einer imaginativen Gegenwelt. In einem kompromisslosen Akt des Widerstands zeichneten und malten die Künstlerinnen und Künstler unter Lebensgefahr. Einige schilderten deutlich die Grausamkeiten und Erniedrigungen, die sie erdulden mussten, andere widersetzten sich der fortschreitenden Entmenschlichung, indem sie das Individuelle und das innere Seelenleben betonten. Von den fünfzig präsentierten Künstlerinnen und Künstlern wurden 24 von den Nationalsozialisten ermordet. Neben größtenteils unbekannten Namen sind auch bekannte Künstler wie Felix Nussbaum oder Ludwig Meidner vertreten. Die Werke sind in der Ausstellung nach Themen gegliedert, die vom Porträt über die alltägliche Grausamkeit im Lager bis zur Erschaffung einer idyllischen Gegenrealität reichen. Ergänzt werden sie durch die Biografien der Künstler, die untrennbar mit den Werken verbunden sind. Eine Kooperation der Bonner Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e. V., des Deutschen Historischen Museums und der israelischen Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem. Kuratoren sind Eliad Moreh-Rosenberg (Yad Vashem) und Walter Smerling (Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e. V.). Die Ausstellung wurde initiiert durch den Medienpartner BILD und die Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e. V. und ermöglicht durch die Förderung der Daimler AG und der Deutsche Bank AG.

    Abstract: Tsibi Geva has been selected to present Archeology of the Present in the Israeli Pavilion at the 56th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia. Geva, who lives and works in Tel Aviv, is one of Israel’s most prominent and influential artists and has exhibited extensively in major exhibitions across Israel, the USA, and Europe. Geva works in diverse media, his work often pushing beyond its physical limits into unique large-scale, site-specific installations. Archeology of the Present will extend over the exterior of the pavilion as well as through its interior, destabilizing familiar divisions between inside and outside, functional and the representational, high and low, abandoned, found, and manipulated elements. It will encompass formal and thematic elements characteristic of Geva’s work throughout his career and will present paintings alongside sculptural installations and abandoned and manipulated objects, abolishing hierarchical distinctions between artistic mediums and structures. In doing so, the project will give expression to Geva’s ongoing concern with elements related to the notion of ‘home’ – including terrazzo tiles, windows, shutters, lattices, and cement blocks; elements which exist as fragments of what once was, or could in principle constitute, a home. The project will raise self-reflexive artistic concerns and epistemological questions, as well as political and cultural questions of locality and immigration, hybrid identity, existential anxiety and existence in an age of instability. The physical layout of the project will create sharp transitions between experiences of blockage, discomfort, or spatial ambiguity and intimate, poetic moments, so that fragility and crudeness, lyricism and violence, are inextricably intertwined. Geva’s work contains numerous layers of significance shaped by processes of figuration and abstraction, revelation and concealment. The question of painting in particular, and of the art object in general, is present in his work alongside political and cultural questions, which simultaneously camouflage and enhance one another. Employing disruption and displacement, repetition and accumulation, Geva makes hybrid works that open up new discursive channels. Geva’s long-term engagement with the stratified structure of identity, and Archeology of the Present in particular, will offer an opportunity to explore this notion within the wider narrative of nationality as proposed by the Venice Biennale. In a year when curator Okwui Enwezor proposes to focus on “All the World’s Futures,” Geva’s site-specific, all-encompassing installation may also be read with regard to the current state of humanity and the world.
