Abstract: The Encyclopaedia of Judaism provides a full and reliable account of the religion, Judaism, beginning in ancient Israelite times and extending to our own day. About Judaism, the religion, its diverse history, literature, beliefs past and present, observances, practices and world-view, and place in the context of society and culture, this is what we know. All principal topics required for the systematic description of any religion, the world view, way of life, theory of the social entity constituted by the faithful are addressed here. In all cases information is set forth in historical and systemic context. Therefore facts take on meaning and produce consequences. The table of contents identifies the topical program, and two elaborate indices make the contents immediately useful for finding quick definitions of facts, persons, places, things, events, practices, and the like. The work speaks to anyone interested in religion, in understanding what religion viewed through the example of Judaism is, and in comprehending the difference religion makes in general. It is written for people of all ages and backgrounds and not only for specialists in the subject or practitioners of Judaism or any other religion. No special pleading for or against religion in general or for Judaism or any particular viewpoint therein finds a place in the pages of this work. Nor is there room here for partisanship within Judaism. The religion, Judaism, is represented by the entire range of Judaic systems of belief and behavior put forth over time and in our own times.

Abstract: What patterns of repentance are presented by such different religious traditions as Judaism, Christianity and Islam? How are transgressions cancelled in the eyes of God, the individual and society? What individual and collective actions are necessary for the granting of forgiveness? Today, the study of the mechanisms of social reconciliation based on inner and collective repentance is an increasingly urgent issue. An international conference on this subject was organized by śMediterraneumů, with the participation of scholars from European, American and Middle Eastern universities. We publish here the essays by J. Assmann (Heidelberg), P.C. Bori, A. Destro, M. Pesce (Bologna), A. Feldtkeller (Berlin), G. Filoramo (Turin), G. Mayer (Heidelberg), Mongia and Mokdad Arfa Mensia (Tunis), J. Neusner (Bard College), M. Nobile (Rome), P. Vassiliadis and D. Passakos (Thessaloniki). "Mediterraneum" is an international center for the study of religions situated in Bertinoro, the medieval Italian city from which Ovadiah, the famous commentator of the Mishna, takes his name

Abstract: A television film by Christopher Nupen and his Allegro Films team which investigates the fruitful but complex relationship between the Jews and German music. The title, We Want the Light!, is taken from a poem by a 12-year-old girl, Eva Pickova, written in the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Her words also provide the climax of the film - in a setting for two choruses and orchestra by the emigé composer Franz Waxman, in his work The Song of Terezin. The interviewees are Evgeny Kissin, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Zubin Mehta, Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman, Toby Perlman, Michael Haas, Elyakim Ha̷etzni, Norman Lebrecht, Margaret Brearley, Paul Lawrence Rose, Leon Botstein, Daniel Barenboim, Yirmiyahu Yovel, Uri Toeplitz, Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, Jaques Stroumsa and Alice Sommer Herz.
