Abstract: Isaiah 42:1–9 is not only a songabout the redemptive servant but a text rich with linguisticand thematic echoes of temple themes. The servant was a representative who wouldtransform Israel into a holy nation by inviting the people back to the temple to reestablish acovenantal relationship with YHWH. Viewing Isaiah’s servant songs as temple texts adds toour understanding of the identity and role of Isaiah’s servant. As we analyze the ritual andliturgical aspects, it becomes clear that the servant functions as a priest. Isaiah 42 describesthe servant’s call and outlines aspects of his commission. The priest’s commission parallelsthe role of the high priest functioning in his capacity within the sanctuary
