    Year of publication: 2005
    Keywords: Wilna ; Partisan ; Widerstand ; Konzentrationslager ; Lied ; Schoa
Abstract: This is an album of songs that were created and sung by members of the Jewish underground of Vilna during World War II. This organized, armed Jewish resistance against the Nazis is an ever-inspiring history of young people who refused to accept defeat. The songs express the profound grief and rage, the ordinary longings, the pride in military exploits, the romance of heroism, but most of all the inextinguishable defiance that animated the young fighters. These songs are presented in Yiddish (with English translations), by performers who are dedicated to the ongoing of fashioning cultural continuity with the murdered world of Yiddish-speaking Jews. Performers are David J. Waletzky, Adrienne Cooper, Josh Waletzky, Irena Klepfisz, Michael Alpert and Henry Sapoznik. The songs on this album were originally heard in the 1986 documentary film, Partisans of Vilna, directed and edited by Josh Waletzky. 1 S'Iz Geven a Zumertog - Michael Alpert 2 Yisrolik - David J. Waltham, Mass. : National Center for Jewish Film
    Language: Yiddish
    Pages: 72 Min. , s/w
    Year of publication: 2009
    Keywords: Sowjetunion ; Arbeiter
Abstract: This rare, newly restored feature was originally advertised as "the first Yiddish talkie from Soviet Russia." The plot centers on Nathan Becker, a Jewish bricklayer who returns to Russia after twenty-eight years in America. After reuniting with his father (played with comic eccentricity by Solomon Mikhoels) Nathan leaves the shtetl to work in the new industrial center of Magnitogorsk. There, he soon finds that the work habits he acquired in America conflict with the Soviet system. While the film's resolution emphasizes the triumph of socialist productivity, the screenplay by Yiddish author Peretz Markish reflects the warmth and humor of the Jewish spirit.

Abstract: To discourage Jews from immigrating to Palestine during the 1920s, the USSR established agricultural collectives in the fertile lands north of the Black Sea. Director Evgeny Tsymbal (Dziga and His Brothers, NYJFF 2004) returns with a compelling documentary about the rise and fall of the Soviet Jewish Autonomous Region in Crimea, featuring newly released archival newsreels.
