Abstract: In 1553 two edicts of the Inquisition in Rome prohibited the printing and possession of the Talmud and some other Jewish books, considered to contain blasphemies against Jesus, in the Papal States. Pope Julius III intervened against these edicts in 1554, legislating that the issue was solely the concern of bishops and not of the Inquisition; the books in question should be handed over to the bishops and the passages containing blasphemies should be erased. The Jews of Bologna agreed with the bishop of the city to establish a commission of notable Jews, headed by a Converso scholar, in order to decide which books would be handed over. The commission functioned until 1559, when the Inquisitor Gian Pietro Carafa became Pope Paul IV; he put the issue back in the hands of the Inquisition and ordered the burning of the books containing blasphemies, which was carried out in 1574.
Note: An expanded version appeared in the "Annali dell'Istituto Storico Italo-Germanico in Trento" 25 (1999).
