Abstract: In 1952 15 Soviet Jews were secretly tried and convicted; many executions followed in the basement of Moscow's Lubyanka prison. This book presents an abridged version of the transcript of the trial revealing the Kremlin's machinery of destruction.

Abstract: With the help of over one hundred illustrations spanning three centuries, Richard Cohen investigates the role of visual images in European Jewish history. The interaction of Jews with the visual arts takes place, as Cohen says, in a vast gallery of prints, portraits, books, synagogue architecture, ceremonial art, modern Jewish painting and sculpture, political broadsides, monuments, medals, and memorabilia. Pointing to recent scholarship that overturns the stereotype of Jews as people of the text, unconcerned with the visual, Cohen shows how the coming of the modern period expanded the relationship of Jews to the visual realm far beyond the religious context. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, the study and collecting of Jewish art became a legitimate and even passionate pursuit, and signaled the entry of Jews into the art world as painters, collectors, and dealers.

Abstract: Looking through the history of art, a reader might conclude that Jews could not create art - and such an assumption, historically incorrect, would be no accident. As we see with disturbing clarity in this book, the discipline of art history - even the first scholarly studies of Jewish works of art - encourages the idea of the nonartistic Jew. Covering the last two centuries, The Nation without Art illuminates the rise of the paradigm of the non-artistic Jew and expresses the ways in which theorists, critics, and artists have sought to subvert, overcome, or work within it. Case studies explore the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts in Jerusalem, whose efforts to use art to create a Jewish nationality in Palestine raise important issues of national identity, and the discovery in 1932 of the third-century Synagogue of Dura Europos, a symbol for scholars struggling against the Third Reich. Among those who supported or challenged concepts of Jewish art, Margaret Olin considers the nineteenth-century rabbinical scholar David Kaufmann, the philosopher Martin Buber, the critic Clement Greenberg, and the filmmaker Chantal Akerman. Olin's work broadens our understanding of the relation of Jews to the visual image, critiques the nationalist, ethnocentric paradigms of current disciplines, and offers insight into the tenacious art historical discourses that thinkers must inhabit uncomfortably or escape with considerable difficulty.

Abstract: This book investigates modern Jewish iconography, especially pertaining to the Jewish experience with political movements in the United States, Britain and Western Europe from 1881 to 1939. In contrast to most works relating Jews and images its emphasis is not on anti-Semitism. I have attempted to look over the shoulder of previous generations of Western Jews, to appreciate how they perceived representations of themselves. Properly speaking this is not a sounding in 'Jewish art' or 'Jewish photography', but rather an interpretation of applications of art, graphics and photography, over time, which accompanied and fostered the ethnic mobilization of Western Jews in the realm of popular culture.Richly illustrated with both familiar and forgotten images, this book explores the ways in which Jews visualized themselves as a political entity between 1881 and 1939. Keen to assimilate into the Western societies of which they were a part, Jews also sought to preserve and re-invent forms of solidarity for themselves. Their efforts of self-assertion in the face of conflicting impulses came to be embodied in such notable personalities as Theodor Herzl, Rebecca Sieff, Leo Baeck and Albert Einstein. While Zionism took the lead in picturing the Jewish leadership of the future, other movements also lionized their champions, availing themselves of modern media to bolster their causes. The emergence of a relatively unified, politicized Western Jewry is best understood against the background not only of anti-Semitism, the Holocaust and Zionism but also of the wider spectrum of Jewish politics, including Yiddishism, trade unionism, socialism, anarchism and feminism. The graphic representations of these diverse streams helped to animate Jews as advocates of both their local communities and their co-religionists worldwide. Michael Berkowitz's timely study sheds light on all these issues as well as on the origins of ethnic politics in general.
