Abstract: This volume provides an analysis of specific texts in art, music, television, literature, homily, liturgy and history that have influenced American Jewish culture. Works discussed include Philip Roth's novel "Counterlife", the musical "Fiddler on the Roof" and Irving Howe's "World of Our Fathers". Which texts are so pivotal that they provide keys to understanding American Jewish culture? he contributors to this volume come from a variety of disciplines, including American studies, anthropology, comparative literature, history, music, religious studies and women's studies. Each writer provides an analysis of a specific text in art, music, television, literature, homily, liturgy and history. Some of the works discussed, such as Philip Roth's novel "Counterlife", the musical "Fiddler on the Roof" and Irving Howe's "World of Our Fathers", are already widely acknowledged components of the American Jewish studies canon. Others - such as "Bridget Loves Bernie", infamous for the hostile reception it received among American Jews - may be considered "key texts" because of the controversy they provoked. Others still, such as Joshua Liebman's "Piece of Mind" and the radio and TV sitcom "The Goldbergs", demonstrate the extent to which American Jewish culture and mainstream American culture intermingle and borrow from each other. This work expands the frame of reference used by students of culture and history both by widening the "canon" of Jewish texts and by providing a way to extrapolate new meanings from well-known sources.

Abstract: Theodore Ross was nine years old when he moved with his mother from New York City to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Once there, his mother decided, for both personal and spiritual reasons, to have her family pretend not to be Jewish. He went to an Episcopal school, where he studied the New Testament, sang in the choir, and even took Communion. Later, as an adult, he wondered: Am I still Jewish? Seeking an answer, Ross traveled around the country and to Israel, visiting a wide variety of Jewish communities. From ̮Crypto-JewsŁ in New Mexico and secluded ultra-devout Orthodox towns in upstate New York to a rare Classical Reform congregation in Kansas City, Ross tries to understand himself by experiencing the diversity of Judaism. Quirky and self-aware, introspective and impassioned, Am I a Jew? is a story about the universal struggle to define a relationship (or lack thereof) with religion.

Abstract: In The Future of the Jews, Stuart E. Eizenstat, a senior diplomat of international reputation, surveys the major geopolitical, economic, and security challenges facing the world in general, and the Jewish world and the United States in particular. These forces include the shift of power and influence from the United States and Europe to the emerging powers in Asia and Latin America; globalization and the new information age; the battle for the direction of the Muslim world; nontraditional security threats; changing demographics, which pose a particular challenge for Jews worldwide and the rise of a new anti-Semitism that seeks to delegitimize Israel as a Jewish state. He also discusses the enduring nature of and challenges to the strategic alliance between the United States and Israel. Eizenstat's provocative analysis will be of interest to everyone concerned about the future of Jews worldwide and in Israel and the United States' role in a world that is confronting unprecedented simultaneous, cataclysmic changes.
