Abstract:
Robin Hirsch's "Kinderszenen - Scenes from Childhood" is a one-man show and part I of the seven-part performance "Mosaic: Fragments of a Jewish life", adapted from his highly acclaimed memoir "Last Dance at the Hotel Kempinski". With humor and insight, rage and compassion, it paints the portrait of a family, an era, a civilization decimated, deracinated and scattered across the earth - gathering up fragments of a life which was once whole, and piecing together a new one. Accompanied by the music of Kurt Weill and Mischa Spoliansky, "Kinderszenen" begins with the conjectured meeting of Hirsch's parents at a costume ball in Berlin under Hitler's shadow, and ends with the hard-won celebration of their silver wedding anniversary on the island of Mallorca. In between are scenes from a complicated coming-of-age as the son of German Jews in postwar Britain and a very English education, including brief appearances by Her Majesty the Queen, His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh and Field Marshall Viscount Bernard Montgomery of El Alamein.
