    Abstract: The Musée d'art et d'histoire du Judaïsme is organising the first French retrospective of the photographer and designer Nathan Lerner, whose career was closely linked to the New Bauhaus school in Chicago. The son of Ukrainian Jewish immigrants, Lerner was born in Chicago in 1913 and while studying painting at the Art Institute began photographing the poor Maxwell Street district of the city from 1935. His photographs show us the America of the Depression years and the misery of the population of this immigrant district, many of whom were Jews from Eastern Europe. Lerner photographed these people with great empathy but not with the eye of a reporter. His concerns were primarily formal, particularly composition and framing. These social photographs are contemporary to those of Walker Evans, Helen Levitt and Dorothea Lange. On Archipenko̷s advice, Lerner enrolled at the New Bauhaus as soon as the school was opened by László Moholy-Nagy in 1937. He met Arthur Siegel and Harry Callahan there, and immediately began experimenting with abstract photography, using a light box to created compositions of everyday objects, ĺlight drawings̷ and photogrammes. He assisted György Kepes in the Light workshop from 1939 until he took over from him in 1941. In late 1945, Moholy-Nagy asked him to direct the teaching of technical drawing at the school (which had been renamed the School of Design). In 1946, he became the school̷s dean then director of studies. In 1949, he left the school, distanced himself from photography and set up a design studio, Lerner Design Associates, specialised in consumer items: packages and bottles, toys and ĺassemble-yourself̷ furniture. He also designed a modular house, which he built himself in 48 hours in 1951, and the familiar plastic ̮HoneybearŁ jar, one of American marketing̷s most emblematic objects. In 1968, he married the pianist Kiyoko Asai, who introduced him to Japan, and from 1973, there were several exhibitions of his work in the United States, Berlin and Japan. Nathan Lerner died in 1997. This exhibition was made possible by the generosity of his wife, Kiyoko Lerner, who donated a major collection of his photographs to the Musée d'art et d'histoire du Judaïsme. This event has also been an opportunity to recall that Nathan and Kiyoko Lerner protected and revealed the unique and unclassifiable work of Henry Darger, one of the major figures of American Art Brut.

    Abstract: This book is the result of almost five years' research that was undertaken between 2004 to 2009 by staff at the Jewish Museum in Prague on the available donated circumcision textiles from Bohemia and Moravia (in collections both in the Czech Republic and abroad). It features a specialist study on the ceremonies that are connected to the birth of a child in the culture and customs of Bohemian and Moravian Jews, as well as three other specialist studies that provide a detailed analysis of the Torah binder - made from the swaddling cloth used at a boy's circumcision - as a unique and previously unknown source for social and art history. The catalogue section contains almost 1,330 items, including translations of Hebrew dedicatory inscriptions. It is illustrated with wonderfully rich full-colour illustrations on foldable pages. There are also indexes of the forenames and surnames of donors (i.e. the boys or their parents or grandparents) and an index of the localities mentioned in the dedicatory inscriptions, supplemented with all the ascertained variants of the Hebrew inscriptions. This book is suitable not only for historians, genealogists, archivists, cultural historians and ethnographers, but also for the general public. A unique register of circumcisions from 1668 to 1930, this book will be a rich resource for anyone interested in Jewish culture.

    Abstract: Felix Nussbaum est un peintre moderne allemand, formé au temps de la "Nouvelle Objectivité" - et au contact des avant-gardes européennes des premières décennies du XXe siècle, notamment la pittura metafisica italienne, le surréalisme international, références qui l'unissent à quelques-uns de ses contemporains : Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, ou John Heartfield. Mais, avant tout, il incarne de façon saisissante le parcours d'un artiste que sa condition de juif persécuté ne laissera jamais en repos. Ce bourgeois juif allemand, d'une famille honorable, au talent soutenu par son père et reconnu par ses pairs, espoir de la jeune peinture, se retrouve, un jour de 1933, mis au ban de l'Académie, jeté sur les routes, sans retour. De critique de la bourgeoisie et de l'ordre établi, il devient le guetteur inquiet de la menace qui rôde. Il la rencontre désormais sous les traits de la révocation, de l'exil, de la guerre, de l'internement et de la clandestinité : les nouvelles dramatiques forment les étapes d'un processus dont l'issue ne fait pas de doute. Né en 1904, Felix Nussbaum étudie les arts décoratifs à Hambourg, puis les Beaux-Arts à Berlin ; lauréat de l'Académie allemande à Rome, il est pensionnaire à la Villa Massimo en 1932. L'arrivée d'Hitler au pouvoir le pousse sur le chemin d'un exil qui, après l'Italie, la Suisse et la France, le conduit à Ostende, en Belgique. Arrêté après la défaite de ce pays, le 10 mai 1940, en tant que ressortissant du Reich, il est interné au camp de Saint-Cyprien dans le sud de la France. Évadé, fugitif, il retourne à Bruxelles, où il demeure caché, avec son épouse Felka Platek, une artiste juive polonaise. Il est finalement déporté avec elle à Auschwitz, le 31 juillet 1944, et assassiné. Son uvre témoigne des influences qu'il revendique : le Douanier Rousseau, Van Gogh, Beckmann, Ensor, Chirico ; son goût pour l̷autoportrait, d'une part, et ses allégories de la Mort, d'autre part, le rattachent aux maîtres anciens flamands et allemands. L'exil et le danger le précipiteront dans une peinture existentialiste sur la condition du juif pourchassé, auquel il donnera une expression fascinante.     Abstract: What do Desert Embroidery, Lifeline for the Old, Almaz, Lakiya, and Mini Gifts have in common? They are all cottage industries created and run by women that employ immigrants to create ethnic products based on crafts learned in their native lands. In fact, Ruth Dayan can be credited with creating cottage industry of ethnic works in Israel. In the early 1950s, Dayan's job was to place agricultural counselors in the newly-settled moshavim [agriculture-based communities] in order to train the new immigrants from countries includingYemen, Iraq, Morocco and Iran. Such training would enable the newcomers to make a living off the land. Early on, Dayan saw an opportunity that was about to be missed: these immigrants had brought with them little else but the traditions of craft and handiwork from their native countries. She persuaded the authorities to support her vision of nurturing cottage industry in order to create ethnic products by newcomers. On Moshav Avdon, for example, immigrants from the Azerbaijan region in Iran designed strong-colored rugs in floral motifs. These same designs were transformed into more modern designs by painter Jean David. In 1954 the Dept. of Vocational Training at the Ministry of Labor established a company aimed at encouraging home industries, coordinating and distributing raw materials required for such industries, and marketing the products in Israel and abroad. The first products were implemented at Kfar Uriah, where intricate embroidery was sewn into collars and cuffs. WIZO was the marketing arm of the project which was originally called Eshet Chayil [Woman of Valor]. Dayan understood that in order to succeed, the products would need to meet modern-day design standards and fashions. Among the designers who turned the homespun items into fashionable, well-designed and saleable products were Fini Leitersdorf, Siona Shimshi, Tamara Yovel-Jones, Shula Litan and Oded Burla. Guiding principles behind the products were excellent design, natural materials, and limited editions. This was an excellent opportunity, and often a first step, for young Israeli designers to showcase their work. The government of Israel originally financed and supported Maskit in order to meet the dual goals of assisting those who had no other skills than their native land crafts, and create an original Israeli style. Now defunct, Maskit was eventually bought by private investors.
