Abstract: "The essays in this volume seek to confront some of the charged meeting points of European--especially German--and Jewish history. All, in one way or another, explore the entanglements, the intertwined moments of empathy and enmity, belonging and estrangement, creativity and destructiveness that occurred at these junctions. These encounters typically unfolded within an uneasy continuum of conflict and co-operation, conformity and resistance, refashioning or maintaining personal and collective dimensions of identity. Clearly, they never allowed for the luxury of indifference. Yet it would be wrong to present meetings of this kind as exclusively confrontational, as stark either-or choices. Life at the junctions may be vulnerable and insecure but it can also yield fresh angles of perception and new opportunities. If these boundary situations generated a modicum of friction, confusion and anxiety, and at times even murderousness, they also produced new alliances and friendships, creative projects and novel fusions and formations of identity. In exploring these dramatic moments in history, Steven Aschheim provides valuable new insights into the history of Europe, Israel, and global Judaism"--

Abstract: "In Antisemitism and the White Supremacist Imaginary: Conflations and Contradictions in Composition and Rhetoric, Mara Lee Grayson calls attention to the complicity of academic institutions and the discipline(s) of rhetoric, composition, and writing studies in the simultaneous perpetuation and denial of anti-Jewish racism. Despite the persistence of antisemitism and Christian hegemony in the United States and its academic institutions, and despite a growing body of antiracist and anti-oppressive scholarship, antisemitism remains largely unaddressed in disciplinary scholarship, curricula, and pedagogy. This book seeks to (begin to) fill that gap by exploring how the rhetoric through which Jewish identity is conceptualized and weaponized by the white supremacist imaginary essentializes Jewish identities and obscures the racist aims and character of antisemitism. Through rhetorical analysis, historical context, and personal narrative, and drawing upon original phenomenological research, Grayson highlights how deeply embedded antisemitic ideologies impact the lived experiences of Jewish teachers, students, and scholars, and perpetuate white supremacy. This book addresses concerns both experiential and rhetorical, illuminates the rhetorical, historical, political, and racial dynamics of antisemitism, and exposes the limitations of existing discourses of whiteness and (anti)racism. This book gestures toward a future in which, through a more nuanced and productive discourse, we can better support Jewish educators and students and engage Jewish members of the discipline as better accomplices in antiracism"--

Abstract: A history and study of the stereotyping and demonization of "others", whether on religious, nationalist, racist or political grounds. It covers Greco-Roman antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Modern Era. Antisemitism receives attention because of its longevity and centrality to the Holocaust. At the close of the 20th century the stereotyping and demonization of "others", whether on religious, nationalist, racist or political grounds, has become a burning issue. Yet comparatively little attention has been paid to how and why we fabricate images of the "other" as an enemy or "demon" to be destroyed. This volume seeks to fill that gap through an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural approach that brings together historians, anthropologists, psychoanalysts, literary critics, and feminists. The historical sweep covers Greco-Roman antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Modern Era. Antisemitism receives special attention because of its longevity and centrality to the Holocaust, but it is analyzed here within the much broader framework of racism and xenophobia. The plurality of viewpoints expressed provide some insights into what is common and what is unique to the many varieties of prejudice, stereotyping, demonization and hatred.

Abstract: This incisive history upends the complacency that confines anti-Judaism to the ideological extremes in the Western tradition. With deep learning and elegance, David Nirenberg shows how foundational anti-Judaism is to the history of the West. Questions of how we are Jewish and, more critically, how and why we are not have been churning within the Western imagination throughout its history. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans; Christians and Muslims of every period; even the secularists of modernity have used Judaism in constructing their visions of the world. The thrust of this tradition construes Judaism as an opposition, a danger often from within, to be criticized, attacked, and eliminated. The intersections of these ideas with the world of power the Roman destruction of the Second Temple, the Spanish Inquisition, the German Holocaust are well known. The ways of thought underlying these tragedies can be found at the very foundation of Western history.
