Abstract: 60 years ago, 25.000 European Jewish refugees found their Noah in Shanghai. They created a legendary history with the Chinese neighbours in Ti Lan Qiao, Shanghai. Today, many of those Jewish refugees returned to this place, where they found the hope in despair. However, it was unknown that this historical site once has been nearly destroyed in the recent years. In the end of April 2006, a bunch of Jewish people who refugeed to Shanghai will gather here again. They are planning to initiate a signature activity to promote this historical site for the World Heritage List proposing.

Abstract: This text presents ways of discussing the mnemonic dimension of architecture in the social sphere through analyses of two museums in Berlin: K. F. Schinkel's Altes Museum and Daniel Libeskind's Jewish Museum Berlin. A hypothesis is formulated, namely that a displacement has taken place from closed hermeneutic commemorative strategies to more open phenomenological strategies operating through manipulations of scale, space, and maetriality as a way of emphasizing the existential tension between memory and forgetfulness.
