Abstract: A Jewish Portuguese philosopher of the Enlightenment period born and raised in Amsterdam, Baruch Spinoza was excommunicated by the city's Jewish authorities in 1656. His questioning of the nature of God and the divine origin of the Hebrew Bible had, the community's leaders believed, crossed the line into heresy. Centuries later, this is considered a formative event in the development of Western Jewish thought. David Ofek's accessible and fascinating documentary excavates this history, tracing six reasons why Spinoza was kicked out and explains why his unorthodox, profoundly spiritual ideas were revolutionary and remain radical to this day"--filmlinc.com

Abstract: Dor, who was born in 1940 in Bukachivtsi, Ukraine, relates the story of her family, the Kastens, based on interviews with her mother. After the German occupation of 1941, Dor was sent with her parents, Yosef and Liba-Lena, and her older brother Shmuel to the ghetto of Rohatyn. Her parents also had a baby boy, who was killed soon after they entered the ghetto. After a mass murder in March 1942, the family escaped from the ghetto and returned to their hometown. They hid in a nearby forest with some other Jewish families, and Dor's mother gave birth to another daughter shortly before the liberation in 1944. After the liberation two more children were born, and the family emigrated to Israel in 1948. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism.) Abstract: At the age of 96, Miriam Weissenstein never imagined that she would be facing a new chapter in her life. But when “The Photo House” – her late husband Rudi’s life’s work – was destined for demolition, even this opinionated and uncompromising woman knew she needed help. Under the cloud of a family tragedy, a special relationship is forged between Miriam and her grandson, Ben, as they join forces to save the shop and its nearly one million negatives that document Israel’s defining moments. Despite the generation gap and many conflicts, Ben and Miriam embark on a heart-wrenching journey, comprising many humorous and touching moments – a journey that requires a lot of love, courage, and compassion.

Many of the Jews who were expelled from Spain towards the end of the Middle Ages settled in the Ottoman Empire. They brought their language with them – Judeo-Spanish or "Ladino" became the most important Jewish language in the Eastern Mediterranean. For 500 years, Judeo-Spanish was the everyday and literary language of the Sephardic Jews, but now the language is in decline. For her documentary Las ultimas palavras, filmmaker Rita Ender embarked on a journey in search of Judeo-Spanish in Turkey. The dissapearance of the language becomes a symbol for the growing sense of uprooting among the younger generation. Ender's reflections on language and memory, on identity, integration, belonging, and cultural independence play an important role not only for the situation of Sephardic Jews in Turkey.

Abstract: "If I saw someone else screaming like my mother, I would be sure that person was mentally disturbed, if it wasn't 100% authentic..." This is what Israel Meir says about his mother, Rabbanit Lea Kook, whose discourse, according to him, stems from absolutely authentic belief. The ultra orthodox community in general & its women in particular are extremely wary of media exposure. The film therefore provides a rare look into the lives of ultra orthodox women, their activities & their grasp of their identities. Tikkun portrays the phenomenon of the Rabbanit (the wife of a Rabbi) of Tiberius, Leah Kook, an orthodox leader followed by many Israeli women. This film is a vivid picture of the routines and customs of life in an ultra-orthodox household and introduces a very charismatic, yet highly controversial main character. Rabbanit Kook, a staunch believer in a prophecy the world refuses to hear, such an extrovert enthusiast that the filmmaker documented her intensively for two entire years. As the maker of the film disguised herself and became one of the members of the house she could explore the backyard of the scene. The surprising cooperation demonstrated by the rabbanit in making this film, and her agreement to such intimate exposure of her physical & spiritual world for two years were a form of "Tikkun" for her. By watching the Rabanit from almost no distance at all, one could reach a conclusion to the controversial attitude of the Israeli society towards Lea Kook: is she genuine or a fraud? Taliya Finkel
