Abstract:
"This first edition of Ecclesiastes handwritten an illuminated by Ben Shahn is limited to 240 copies, each bearing the Artist's signature on an original lithograph drawing presented with the volume. 26 copies numbered A to Z are printed on Arches Grand Vélin pure rag paper. They include two original lithograph drawings signed by the Artist, together with an extra set of the illustrations on Arches Vergé pure rag paper and a series of progressive states of one of the plates. 200 copies numbered 1 to 200 are printed on Arches Vergé pure rag paper. 14 copies numbered I to XIV are hors commerce. The illustrations were reproduced in facsimile in Paris by a combination of lithography, collotype and hand-stencilling, in the workshops of the Imprimerie Mourlot for the lithography and of MM. Hourdebaigt and Crampe for the collotype and stencil. Collotype and hand-stenceling were also used for the reproduction of the manuscript pages and illuminated chapter headings. The gold lettering which forms part of the title-page motif was reproduced in serigraphy by Thierry, Paris. The editorial matter was handset in Garamond and printed by the Imprimerie La Ruche, Paris. The binding was by Engel, Malakoff. The slip-case for the principal edition, and the box and portfolio for the special edition, were made by Adine, Paris. The volume was produced under the supervision of the Artist and Arnold Fawcus, and was made and published in France by the Trianon Press, Chateau de Boissia, Clairvaux-les-Lacs, Jura and 125 avenue du Maine, Paris."
