Abstract:
The debate over the erection in the center of Berlin of a memorial "to the murdered Jews of Europe" took place between the same two contrary sides represented in every debate on the Holocaust. One, "harmonization", contends that the constant reminders of guilt are destructive of Germany's identity and of its ability to assume its present-day responsibilities in the community of nations. Supporters of this position therefore minimize this guilt by relativization or universalization. Proponents of the second position, "problematization", assert that remembrance of the Holocaust is the very foundation of German identity and the guide to Germany's future actions. This is the concept of the Holocaust memorial as defined by the Berlin city council.
