Abstract:
The synagogue began holding services in 1919 in the Youth Club and Settlement in 26a Betts Street in the area of St George's (in the East End of London) and was originally called The St George's Settlement Synagogue. The founders were Basil and Rose Henriques, who had earlier (in 1914-15) founded youth clubs for immigrant Jewish boys and girls called the "Oxford & St. George's Club". The Henriques couple ran the clubs and Basil Henriques was the rabbi of the synagogue. At the time, this synagogue was the only one affiliated to both the Reform and Liberal movements. In 1929 it moved to a large building in Berners Street, and was known as the Bernhard Baron Settlement. In 1973, the building was sold and converted into an apartment building, and the clubs moved to Totteridge in North London.
