Abstract:
The essays in this issue, which is entitled "Law as literature," contain substantial segments from highly representative rabbinic texts: the Mishnah, the Mekilta deRabbi Ishmael, the Babylonian Talmud, and the Palestinian Talmud. Their aim, in part, is to allow readers who irregularly encounter rabbinic writings to follow these texts closely, to watch them work, as it were, from the inside. The essays gathered here also illustrate and evaluate the methods currently used in the study of rabbinic literature. Collectively they make a forceful statement about the way rabbinic texts are to be read, analyzed, and understood. They signal the emergence in rabbinic scholarship of the text as an object of study in its own right
