Abstract: A Jewish family living a simple, happy life in rural Poland. When the Nazis took over their village, Izhak Shumowitz with his wife, little girl and other members of his family fled into the forest, determined to avoid the fate of their fellow Jews. "The Red Forest" tells of their years living like hunted animals, fear following them from hiding place to hiding place. They found shelter in the forest, in open fields, in underground bunkers, under pigsties, even in a windmill. They were courageous and blessed with an uncanny ability to adapt to ever-changing conditions. Two babies were born during this time; one survived only a few months, the second was smothered by the family, who feared the baby's cries would reveal their hiding place to the Nazis. They survived due to the help of two Christian farming families, who endangered their own lives to save them. They became one of the "Righteous of the Nations"in Yad Vashem, Jerusalem. It was their belief in the decency of humanity that kept alight the flame of hope for a better future, and gave the members of the family the strength to act relentlessly against the evil that surrounded them.

Abstract: Two cousins relate their experiences with Bielskiís partisan brigade in war-torn Russia during the Second World War. Natives of Novogrodek, part of present-day Belarus, they describe Jewish life before the Holocaust and furnish a most moving account of how a thriving and prosperous Jewish center was decimated by the Nazis and local collaborators. Initial joy when their hometown was taken over by the Soviet Union disappeared when the Germans ran the Russians out of town and started implementing policies to eradicate all Jews and anything Jewish. Dov (Berl), the elder of the cousins, whose account comprises the first section of the book, lost his immediate family in the early days of German occupation and escaped from ghetto life in November 1942 to join the partisans in the dense forests of the area. He joined the Kalinin brigade and spent the rest of the war fighting the Germans and Russian sympathisers. Jack (Idel), seven years his junior, remained in the ghetto with the remnants of their once-large family. After a failed attempt in December 1942 to escape to reach the partisans - in an episode which nearly cost him his life - Jack joined an escape effort from the ghetto in September 1943, successfully reached the partisans as a member of Bielskiís partisan brigade and was reunited with his cousin. This second section features many original documents from Russian archives and elsewhere, about the partisan bandsí structure and their activities. The authors provide a unique view, not only of actual incidents, but of how two different people react to events and experiences. Updated in this second edition by a new preface and appendix, this is their story: a tale of tragedy, courage and triumph.

Abstract: About 5,000 children were imprisoned in the Kaunas Ghetto from 1941-1944, of whom some 250-300 were smuggled out of the ghetto, hidden by Gentiles and survived. This book is a collective memory of events that happened to Kaunas Jewry during the Nazi occupation of Lithuania. It contains 50 stories of people who suffered through the Holocaust in their childhood in Kaunas. Most of the contributors are writing about their ordeal for the first time, after more then 60 years of silence. The stories cover the background of the families before the war, life in the Ghetto, and the main tragic events that happened in Kaunas during three years of fascist regime in Lithuania. The memoirs describe how children were smuggled out of the Ghetto and their experiences and feelings living with the gentiles who sheltered them.
