Mit diesem Leitsatz machte sich der französische Ethnologe auf den Weg, um jüdische Lebensformen auf der ganzen Welt festzuhalten. Daraus wurden eine über zwei Jahrzehnte dauernde Reise durch mehr als vierzig Länder und ein zweibändiges Werk, dessen Entstehung von Steven Spielberg und Estée Lauder gefördert wurde. Es ist ein Jahrhundert-Projekt, das erstmals das internationale Judentum von Argentinien über Hongkong bis Usbekistan dokumentiert. Die Aufnahmen sind von eindringlicher Intensität und zeugen von einer Vielfalt jüdischer Lebensformen, die stets zwischen Anpassung an die Umgebung und Sicherung der eigenen Identität schwanken. Auf eine außergewöhnliche Gemeinde stieß Brenner mitten in Äthiopien. Die Menschen dort pflegten über tausend Jahre hinweg in völliger Isolation uralte Bräuche und erfuhren erst in den 1930er Jahren von ihren "weißen" Glaubensbrüdern. Auch in Deutschland konnte der Fotograf das wieder erwachende jüdische Leben dokumentieren. Frédéric Brenners einzigartiges Bilddokument präsentiert im ersten Band 270 Fotos, die die Vielfalt jüdischer Traditionen in der Diaspora zeigen. Im zweiten Band kommen Intellektuelle wie Jacques Derrida oder Carlos Fuentes zu Wort, Juden aus der Diaspora nehmen Stellung zu den Bildern, und Frédéric Brenner schildert seine Erfahrungen in den Gemeinden.
