Abstract:
Describes in detail the events of the Damascus blood libel in 1840, focusing on its political aspects - in particular, relations between France, Great Britain, and Syria - and the role of Montefiore in exonerating the Jews from guilt and freeing the Jews who were arrested (some Jews died in prison), although some Jews were killed and their homes looted by rioters, and many had fled the city. Examines the cases of the Jews who were arrested, and the official reports of their investigations. Discusses also the contentions between Adolphe Crémieux and Moses Montefiore regarding who should be credited for ending the affair by interceding with Mehmet Ali, the Pasha of Egypt, who at that time had occupied Syria. Contends that it was the French Consul in Damascus, the comte de Ratti-Menton, who was responsible for instigating the Damascus Affair.
