Abstract:
Surveys the image of the Jew in periodicals meant to be read by the Polish gentry in a period of growing nationalism. Analyzes the contents of items on Jewish themes in "Wiek", "Rola", and "Niwa", all of them of conservative orientation; "Rola" was openly antisemitic. These periodicals appeared in that part of Poland which was under Russian rule. Surveys the years 1873-93, focusing on 1879-83, when a radical change occurred in the process of assimilation of the Jews. The debates between liberals and conservatives centered around problems related to modernization. The assimilating, secular Jews found themselves in the center of the controversy. They were viewed by conservatives as an evil element in society, much worse than the traditional, religious Jews. Shows how the periodicals surveyed created a new stereotype of the "modern" Jew, a cosmopolitan, destroying Polish national and Catholic values.
