Abstract:
The ghetto in Czernowitz was established in October 1941 by the Romanian administration of Bukovina. By mid-November, ca. 30,000 out of the ca. 50,000 Jews in the ghetto were deported to Transnistria. The mayor of Czernowitz, Traian Popovici, managed to persuade the Romanian military governor and General Antonescu to leave the remaining 20,000 Jews, claiming that they were vital to the economic stability of the town. A selection commission was established, which was permanently the subject of official inquiries and reports. Examines the image of the Jews as reflected in the reports of the secret services, the gendarmerie, and the police.
