Abstract:
Traces the development of the concept "antisemitism", from its inception in 19th-century Germany by Wilhelm Marr as part of his race theory. The Antisemiten-Liga and the anti-Jewish review "Deutsche Wacht" were founded by Marr in 1879. The term "Antisemitismus" was adopted by well-known antisemites such as Adolf Stöcker and Theodor Fritsch, and first appeared in the dictionary "Der Grosse Brockhaus" in 1882. From 1907 on, protests were made against the term and demands were heard to replace it with "Antijudaismus". In 1943, the Nazi "Handbuch der Judenfrage" criticized the word "Antisemitismus" as the invention of "Wilhelm Marr of Jewish descent".
