Abstract:
Traces the problematic nature of the "Jewish question" in Hungarian history from medieval times to the present. In the 19th century, the Jews’ alliance with liberal Hungarian nationalism led to their emancipation. However, envy, religious prejudice, and fear of Eastern European immigration at a time of economic crisis gave rise to political antisemitism, encouraged after World War I by anger regarding the Trianon settlement, viewed by many as a Jewish plot. The antisemitic legislation during the 1930s has been seen as the first stage in the Holocaust, although Hungary was not responsible for the Final Solution and expressed opposition to it. Ambivalent attitudes in Hungary today prevent an honest re-examination of the Hungarians’ actions during the Holocaust.
