Abstract:
Analyzes the image of the Jew in Borges' stories in the context of the antisemitism-ridden atmosphere in Argentina of the 1930s-40s. In some of his works (e.g. "La muerte y la brújula"), Borges satirizes the racial and religious prejudices and stereotypes of his countrymen, among them the alleged Jewish wish for world domination, the Jewish conspiracy, and ritual murder. Through comparison with Creoles and European-born Argentines, Borges boldly places the Jew in the sphere of normal human nature.
