Abstract:
Discusses the situation of the Jews in France in the 13th-early 14th centuries. The Jews, along with the serfs and the rights to coinage, were considered to be under royal authority. However, many local barons objected to these conditions. The decision made by Philip the Fair to expel the Jews in 1306 was a part of his efforts to retain regalian rights. These efforts also included coinage reform in the 1290s and in 1311, and an attack on the Knights Templar in 1307. States that although Philip shared with his barons the spoils taken from the Jews, the purpose of the expulsion was to demonstrate and enhance royal supremacy.
