Abstract:
Examines the motives for the "Rindfleisch" pogroms in various towns in Franconia as described in Christian legends, recorded in "Historiae memorabiles" by the Dominican prior Rudolf von Schlettstadt. Many of these legends mention desecration of the Host or ritual murder as causes of the persecutions. Notes that at this time the position of the Jews deteriorated due to conflicts between the Church and the secular powers, and moneylending on a large scale to Christians. States that the most trifling causes, or even rumors, could bring about a pogrom.
