Abstract:
Before the 19th century, Jewish literature (in Yiddish and Hebrew) depicted the Polish nobleman ("porets") as a protector and savior in times of trouble. In the first half of the 19th century, Polish noblemen were depicted as patrons of the Enlightenment and of Jewish authors, although there was also mention of contempt for Jews on the part of noblemen and peasants. Disappointed with Polish nationalism, Jews identified with German or Russian culture; positive non-Jewish figures in the literature lacked clear national characteristics. In the late 19th-early 20th century the Polish nobleman became a caricature (especially in the works of I.L. Peretz); he is depicted with traditional negative traits (including antisemitism), whereas the world of the Jewish lessee ("arendar") is entirely good.
