Abstract:
Examination of a number of Latin monastic accounts of the Crusades indicates continuing interest in details and aspects of the pogroms against the Jews in the Regnum Teutonicum. Contrary to a general assumption about indifference among Christians and Christian chroniclers, historiographical study indicates the spread of a broad spectrum of attitudes over space and time. Part of the analysis focuses on the "Annales Hildesheimenses" which, in its sympathy for the Jews, differs markedly from the anti-Jewish perspective of the chronicle of Frutolf, which views the Jews, the innermost enemies of the Church, as deserving of annihilation. While some other chronicles follow Frutolf, one mentions resistance to the Crusaders by the bishop of Prague and another considers the killings of the Jews to be mass murder.
