Kurzfassung:
Jessner, a German Jewish director, staged "The Merchant of Venice" in Tel-Aviv in 1936 as a political play dealing with the Nazi persecution of German Jews and as a reflection of his own persecution, since he had been forced by the Nazis to leave Germany. However, the reception of the play was ambivalent, causing Jessner to leave Eretz-Israel as well.
