Abstract:
Briefly describes historical, psychological, and anthropological analyses of the concentration camp experience, but contends that there have been few studies on the social adaptation of the prisoners in the camps. The behavior patterns, group relationships, and ideological attitudes of prisoners were not uniform - they were just as varied inside the "concentrationary universe" as they had been previously in the "outside world". Discusses factors which contributed to the individual's survival in conditions of material, social, and emotional deprivation.
