Abstract:
Discusses the Jews' exodus from Iraq in 1950-51, disputing the polarized views of Zionists (who place sole blame on Arab violence or threats) and Arabs (who blame a Zionist conspiracy). The 1948 Arab-Israeli war resulted in some anti-Jewish measures, including a public hanging. While some Jews were persecuted as communists, others suffered for being underground Zionists. Nevertheless, the claim that the Zionists conspired to cause a mass exodus is weakened by the Israeli government's initial reluctance to absorb many Iraqi Jews. The Jews' exodus reflected both push and pull factors. The Jewish exodus from Arab countries and the Palestinian one earlier, during wartime, were basically different and not an exchange of populations. Arab denial that anti-Jewish hostility contributed to the Jewish exodus is ahistorical. Contends that Jewish refugees from Arab countries are entitled to compensation for abandoned lands and property, as are Palestinian refugees.
