Abstract:
Werner of Oberwesel (1271-1287; also known as Werner of Bacharach) was a 16-year-old boy whose unexplained death was blamed on Jews, leading to revenge killings. Anti-Jewish violence spread from the Middle Rhine to the Moselle and the Lower Rhine region. The Jewish community turned to King Rudolf I, who was convinced the accusation was groundless. He fined the citizens who murderered Jews, and ordered the burning of Werner's corpse to prevent his veneration. But the king's orders were not carried out. Eventually, Werner was declared a saint, and a chapel was dedicated to his veneration in Bacharach. Although the chapel was destroyed in the 17th century, Werner was venerated as a saint in the Diocese of Trier until 1963. However, “Saint Werner’s Chapel” in Oberwesel was renovated in 2001, and was consecrated to the former saint, Werner of Oberwesel.
