Abstract:
Examines the image of the Jew in oral folklore through the interpretation of two Hungarian folktales (AT 561 and AT 592) found in several printed collections of the 19th-20th centuries. While both portray the Jew in the principal role, one describes the Jew as victim, the other as the villain. Argues that distrust of the Jew is manifest in the various versions of these tales. The antisemitic images presented in these tales are a reflection of the hostility of the Church toward Jews throughout history.
