Abstract:
A paper presented at the conference "Aspects de l'héritage culturel du christianisme en Russie" (Geneva University, 1988). Discusses the theological approach of Sergei Bulgakov (1871-1944), the Russian Orthodox philosopher, to the "Jewish question" as reflected in his essays and diary. In an essay of 1906, Bulgakov rejected Marx's anti-Jewish theories, arguing that Marx's atheistic and economic perspective caused him to neglect the religious dimension of Jewish history. States that Bulgakov's critical remarks, in his unpublished diary, on Jewish involvement in the Bolshevik Revolution cannot be taken as evidence of an antisemitic attitude. In 1941 he made strong statements against Hitler's antisemitism and Nazi persecution of the Jews. Concludes that Bulgakov was inspired by a Pauline view of the Jews, believing that they would always remain the "chosen people" despite their temporary refusal to recognize Jesus, and viewing their persecution as part of a divine plan. Pp. 541-542 contain discussion on this paper.
