Abstract:
Translation of a paper delivered at a conference on "Medical Science without Compassion" in Köln, September 1988. Condemns the lack of ethics in the German medical establishment during the Nazi regime, and the lack of opposition to the racist and discriminatory legislation which began in 1933. Deplores, also, the lack of opposition in the U.S. and other free countries, where Nazi medical policies were well-known. Those countries also discriminated against refugee medical personnel who fled Nazi Germany, refusing to grant them licenses to practice. The only organized opposition occurred in the Netherlands in 1941. Even after the war, the medical establishments in Europe and America turned a blind eye to Nazi medical atrocities which have only recently been discussed and condemned. Relates to the recent discovery that parts of bodies of the victims of the Nazi terror are used in university anatomy classes in Germany. Several universities have since then buried the remains and held memorial services for the victims. In Tübingen, the graves and the memorial monument were desecrated a few days after their consecration in 1991.
